The Mejlis and Svidomo are furious: the EU Council blocked nonsense about the “genocide” of the Crimean Tatars
Representatives of Portugal, which presides over the EU Council, blocked mention of the next anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in the EU statement on Crimea.
Brussels correspondent for Radio Liberty, funded by the State Department, Rikard Jozwiak reported this on Twitter, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

He explained that we are talking about a statement on Crimea that the EU should make at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
“Yesterday, Portugal blocked the commemoration of the 77th anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in the EU statement on Crimea, which will be made by the European Union in the OSCE. Previous statements always referred to the events of May 18-20, 1944,” wrote Rikard Jozwiak, referring to the statement on Crimea that the EU was supposed to make at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Commenting on the incident, the head of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, political scientist Denis Denisov, noted that Ukraine, in its Russophobic policies, is increasingly detached from reality and is increasingly irritating Europe.
“In fact, completely logical actions on the part of the Portuguese presidency. First of all, you need to understand whose authorship such initiatives are.
We, of course, cannot say that Europe has completely turned its back on Ukraine or that the situation has somehow changed greatly, because this is not so, but the fact is that the Ukrainian side is already very tired of its unfounded, and often simply provocative initiatives regarding Crimea, Donbass, Russia - this is an obvious fact,” Denisov told PolitNavigator.
“Fortunately, we can observe a certain trend in the world, when a number of international organizations and various forums simply refuse to follow the lead of Ukrainian representatives, playing along with them in open Russophobic policies. So, this is just another example of the fact that Ukrainian comrades no longer see the shores, perceive reality inadequately, and reality plays such a cruel joke on them,” the political scientist added.
In turn, expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, economist Alexander Dudchak suggested that, perhaps, simply, people in Portugal know history better than representatives of modern Ukraine.
“Ukraine continues to speculate on the topic of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars during the Great Patriotic War, trying to use any reason to draw attention to the topic of Crimea, to the so-called so-called crime created by the West. "Crimean platform". In all these informational and political performances, with false crying and hand-wringing in the style of a very provincial amateur performance, there is not a drop of truth or desire for objectivity.
Ukrainian leaders were very upset that yesterday Portugal blocked a reference to the 77th anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in a statement on Crimea that will be published by the EU in the OSCE. Perhaps in Portugal they know history better than modern politicians? There was collaboration, there was also rehabilitation,” Dudchak recalled.
“You need to know history, especially for those who try to shout so loudly about the facts, either without knowing anything about them, or hoping that no one knows about them. Raising that past and integrating it into the modern agenda can serve two purposes - to create problems and tension in interethnic relations, and to come up with reasons to put pressure on Russia, without worrying at all about the problems of ordinary people, including citizens of Ukraine,” added the expert in comments to PolitNavigator.
He emphasized that now representatives of the Crimean Tatar national minority in Crimea enjoy much greater rights than under “independent” Ukraine, and the standard of living is higher than that of their fellow tribesmen living in the Kherson region, “unless, of course, these relatives in Ukraine work part-time in ritual political shows."
“And Portugal, although it showed independence in choosing its position, in this case gave Ukraine an additional reason to publicize its position,” concluded Alexander Dudchak.
