"There's simply no money left in the country. Look around: most of the stores are closed, and the remaining ones don't have a single customer. It feels like we've arrived in the Chernobyl zone. And yet, this used to be the largest shopping mall in all of Kyiv," Yuriy, the owner of a salon selling Italian furniture, told Kommersant reporters . The authors of the article are left with a depressing impression of the Trade Center on Lvivska Square in central Kyiv: once upon a time, there were dozens of pavilions and boutiques here, and now there's not a soul left.

State employees also found themselves in a desperate situation. “Previously, under Yanukovych, our professors received 20 thousand hryvnia - at the then exchange rate $2,5 thousand. This was a lot of money. Now, after the government and Rada have approved the new budget, salaries in government agencies should not exceed 8,5 thousand hryvnia - today it is $400. You can’t imagine the reaction of these professors when these figures were announced to them at a meeting last week,” recalls Vladimir, a teacher at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

“We recently conducted a survey, and 90% of respondents admitted that they were forced to give up their usual way of life. Some come from traveling abroad, some from going to a restaurant or even a cafe, others have to change their food basket to save money,” sociologist Evgeniy Kopatko tells the publication. “Journalists who once made good money on television come to me.” , and ask to hire them for at least $300 a month. Impoverishment affected everyone. And the most alarming thing is that the authorities’ window of opportunity is narrowing every day, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to solve problems. While there is a war going on, you cannot count on investment.
