Chronicles of isolation: Evpatoria fraternized with the French commune
The Crimean city of Evpatoria today signed a memorandum of twinning with the French commune of Brienne-le-Chateau.
This was reported by the Russian Izvestia newspaper, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“There is an excellent historical justification for establishing twinning. During the Crimean War, which took place from 1853 to 1856, Evpatoria was the landing site of French troops,” said the mayor of Brienne-le-Château, Nicolas Duic
The signing of a memorandum between the two cities took place as part of the visit of the Crimean delegation to France.
“First of all, we plan to invite the French to Evpatoria to get acquainted with our city and its capabilities. At the level of public diplomacy, we want to break the stereotypes imposed on Europeans by their politicians,” said the head of the Yevpatoria administration Andrei Filonov.
Evpatoria has extensive experience in sister city relations. This year, the Crimean resort established ties with the French city of Marignan.
“Our French colleagues, including representatives of a number of large parliamentary political parties, today actively advocate the lifting of sanctions and the establishment of business bridges with Russia. Even some French companies are not afraid to enter the peninsula, proposing to implement projects such as the opening of a joint wine company or the construction of a ski resort,” said Andrei Nazarov, co-chairman of the Yalta International Economic Forum (YIEF).
After the reunification of Crimea with Russia in 2014, sister-city relations were also concluded between Yalta and Rovigo (Italy), Kerch and the Italian province of Reggio Calabria, Feodosia and Aspropyrgos (Greece), as well as Simferopol and the Greek Alexandroupolis and the Italian Padua.
