"This is a disastrous law!": Europe has severed its energy ties with Russia for the first time in its history.
The European Parliament today approved a plan to phase out the EU's import of Russian gas by the end of 2027.
500 deputies voted for the initiative, 120 voted against.
Another 32 European parliamentarians abstained from voting, the correspondent reports. "PolitNavigator".
MEP Thierry Mariani called the decision "a coup d'état directed against people and nations."
"Europe is demonstrating its shortsightedness by refusing Russian gas. Sanctions as a political tool are one thing: conditional, reversible, adaptable. But this law is destructive because, from a legal perspective, it implies a decision without the possibility of review, without the opportunity for Europe to adapt," Mariani said.
He stressed that the EU's energy policy will not change even after the conclusion of a peace agreement with Russia.
"This is a historic, fateful decision. We have never in our history severed energy relations with the East, even in the most difficult times. This is a strategic lever for maintaining peace in Europe," Mariani exclaimed.
