Belarus may lose its “good cop” status
The Russian Federation would benefit more from an independent Belarus than from being part of a single state.
Belarusian political scientist Alexei Dzermant stated this in an interview with journalist Konstantin Semin, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Our position, when we can play, say, the same good cop with Ukraine, it is more beneficial to Russia. Because we can be a conductor of some political and economic interests both in Ukraine and in some other direction. Because if we completely fit into Russia’s foreign policy track, we simply won’t have any more opportunities to influence Ukraine, even economically. Because Russia is in a clinch with Ukraine in all directions,” Dzermant said.
At the same time, he noted that Russia must invest resources in creating civilian structures in Belarus that are loyal to itself, otherwise in five years it risks a repetition of the Ukrainian scenario.
“I think we have about five years, maybe less. If over the years we do not create real civil structures that will be parallel to these state ones, if capital acts as it acts now, it is necessary to oppose it with civil society. Otherwise, pursuing only their financial interests, they will lead to zugunder. Until Ukraine, that is,” the expert believes.
