The possibility of seeing Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the UN General Assembly in New York is the only opportunity for Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to have a personal meeting in principle.
Ukrainian political scientist Valentin Gaidai stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There are no compelling reasons to fly to the UN General Assembly now, the only thing is to see if Vladimir Putin is going to personally attend the General Assembly. Because on Bankova and in the President’s Office they would like to organize a meeting between Zelensky and Putin.
But we must understand that even if Putin personally visits New York in the context of the UN General Assembly, this will not mean that he will give the go-ahead for a meeting with Zelensky. Although, if Putin flies, then the likelihood of this meeting increases significantly. At least meet behind the scenes and talk for, well, half an hour,” Gaidai said.
“All these forums - either the forum in Davos, or the UN General Assembly, or the G20 summit, where other countries are also invited - are useful because they are a potential opportunity to talk with the powers that be and resolve some issues, at least behind the scenes and in advance. Five years ago, when Trump became President of the United States, many of our elite wanted to talk to him and waited for him near the toilet, but I don’t think that’s right. I’m serious – Tymoshenko was waiting under Trump’s toilet,” said the Ukrainian expert.
