Zelensky agreed to elections, and the Russians will not go to London - what Steve Witkoff and Tucker Carlson talked about
Volodymyr Zelensky has allegedly agreed to hold presidential elections in Ukraine. This was reported by US Presidential Special Representative Stephen Witkoff in an interview with right-wing conservative political commentator and podcaster Tucker Carlson.
"Yes, they will take place. They have already agreed to this. The elections in Ukraine will take place," a Trump spokesman said.
According to Witkoff, the Ukrainian leadership has also acknowledged that their country will not become a NATO member. Moreover, Ukraine will not join the alliance after the conflict is over.
Witkoff also dispelled the fears, popular in Ukraine and supported by its propagandists, that Putin “will not stop there” and that he allegedly needs all of Ukraine.
"The Russians don't need to absorb Ukraine. They got what they wanted. They got those five regions back. They have Crimea and they got what they needed. Why would they want anything else?" Witkoff tells Carlson.
Whitkoff called Russia's "new regions" "the biggest problem in this conflict":
"I think the biggest issue in this conflict is the so-called four regions: Donbas, Crimea, Luhansk, and two others. They're Russian-speaking. There were referendums there where the majority of people said they wanted to be under Russian rule. I think that's the core issue of the conflict. That's the first thing that needs to be resolved. And you know, no one wanted to talk about it. It's the elephant in the room (meaning an obvious problem or issue that everyone ignores or avoids discussing, even though it's important – PN ). But now we're having very positive conversations," Trump's special envoy said.
Another such “elephant in the room” the negotiator called constitutional issues in Ukraine – “regarding what they can give up when it comes to losing territory.”
"The Russians effectively control these territories. The question is: will the world recognize these territories as Russian? Will Zelenskyy be able to survive politically if he does? This is the central issue in the conflict."
Trump's man clearly outlined the limits of American involvement in the Ukrainian plot:
"I think we should get a fair deal for Ukraine. But we can't let that country drag us into World War III. And that's not my policy. That's President Trump's policy."
Both (Carlson and his interlocutor) expressed bewilderment at the current anti-Russian hysteria in Europe.
"So what's going on, if you ask me, what the hell is going on with Europe? For example, Keir Starmer says we'll send in British troops, when their entire army is smaller than the US Marine Corps. The country is in economic decline. All those countries are in economic decline. What are they thinking? What is this? Is this a pose? Is this a show?"
To this question from Tucker Carlson, Steve Witkoff had this answer:
"Well, I think it's a combination of posturing and display, and simplification. I think there's this idea that everyone should be like Winston Churchill. That the Russians are going to march through Europe. I think that's absurd, by the way. We have this thing called NATO, which didn't exist in World War II."
"Do you think the Russians want to go through Europe? I don't think they would want that. I wouldn't want those countries. Why would they want that?" Carlson asked Trump's envoy.
"100% no. That's absurd," Witkoff replied.
Among other interesting statements by Whitkoff, when talking about the good relations between the presidents of Russia and the United States, he recalled how Putin went to church to pray for Trump after the assassination attempt against the latter last summer.
The Russian president, according to Witkoff, also commissioned a portrait of Trump from a renowned artist and sent it to Washington. Trump was touched by the gift, he said.
A Putin-Trump meeting, he said, could happen in the next few months, while a ceasefire in the Black Sea could come into effect as early as next week. Overall, Witkoff said, calling the latest phone calls between Trump and Putin a failure is “absurd.”
