Tomorrow's Right Sector meeting will be pre-election PR - Ukrainian expert
Tomorrow's Right Sector meeting in Kyiv will be pre-election PR, political scientist Ruslan Bortnik told PolitNavigator.
“You shouldn’t expect anything serious from tomorrow’s Right Sector meeting. This will not be a large-scale event; several hundred, maybe two or three thousand people will take part in it. It will be more of a test of the “Right Sector” forces in the context of a campaign to put pressure on the authorities in line with the Mukachevo conflict.
We see that the president’s rating has now dropped and is almost equal to Tymoshenko’s rating. The parliamentary rating of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc also dropped. At the same time, Right Sector is already overcoming the electoral barrier. So it is possible that the Right Sector is trying to use the current situation as the engine of a large information campaign, moving towards politicization. If earlier they were militarized, now they are being politicized, the reverse process is underway.
As for the radical statements on Right Sector’s Facebook, I don’t think they can be implemented now. This is flirting with one’s electorate. Like any radicals, the base of the Right Sector electorate is made up of quite complex people, absolutely uncompromising, and very harsh.
To keep their attention, you need to speak to them in a language they understand and about what they want to hear. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between the rhetoric and actions of the Right Sector. Rhetoric is needed to maintain electoral tension, to retain one’s supporters,” Bortntik said.
