“Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande arrived in Kyiv on Thursday evening and will then visit Moscow on Friday. They want to present to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin a new proposal to resolve the conflict,” the publication reports.
The visit of Merkel and Hollande came as a surprise to both Kyiv and Moscow. Hollande told reporters in Paris that he and Merkel want to make a new proposal for peace in the east of the country.
“Given the escalation of violence in recent days, Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande will sharply intensify their efforts to resolve the conflict,” federal government spokesman Steffan Seibert said.
At this very time, US Secretary of State John Kerry is visiting Kiev, who met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. According to Kerry's spokesman, the United States wants to show that it supports a return to serious negotiations.
The newspaper connects the peace initiatives of John Kerry and the sudden visit of Hollande and Merkel to Kyiv and Moscow with the beginning of the rebel offensive in the Debaltsevo region, as well as the announcement of mass mobilization in the rebel republics.
