Freezing the conflict in Ukraine will solve nothing – the West will continue to destabilize Russian-controlled territory, and Moscow will respond by destabilizing Europe.
American political scientist and University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer reported this on the air of the video blog of American Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" We'll end up with a frozen conflict. It seems almost impossible to me that we'll negotiate a peace agreement where everyone lives happily ever after. And we in the West, along with the Ukrainians, will do everything possible to undermine Russia's position in the areas of Ukraine it annexed. The Russians, on the other hand, will do everything possible to accelerate and deepen the division in Europe , to cause problems in transatlantic relations. They'll try to undermine the West. So , as a result of the frozen conflict between Ukraine and the West, and Russia on the other hand, there will be intense security competition ," Mearstheimer said.
He warned that after the conflict in Ukraine is frozen, five more hotbeds of tension will appear in Eastern Europe.
" A conflict could break out over the Black Sea, a conflict over Moldova . Third, and this is very important, a conflict could break out over Belarus. What will happen when Lukashenko loses power ? Will we try to provoke a color revolution there? Fourth, the Baltic Sea, a NATO-controlled lake. And fifth, the Arctic, where seven NATO member countries are located, the only one that isn't is Russia. The potential for conflict there is very high. So, once the war in Ukraine comes to an end and there is a frozen conflict, we will still have enormous problems involving the Russians and the West. And this will have serious potential for escalation and for a hot war to break out again," the expert explained.
