The Ukrainian command did not bother to create defensive structures for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Volchansk in the north of the Kharkov region, and therefore the troops occupied residential buildings, using them as cover from the advancing Russian army.

“How to defend? Our infantry in Volchansk has to take positions in houses. That is, there are no dug trenches, cracks, dugouts - only houses. We understand perfectly well that at home in a street war, in a war in the city, especially in a city like Volchansk - this is a one-story town where there is only one block of nine-story buildings in the center.
Of course, it is extremely difficult for infantry to take refuge in these small houses. Of course, we need shelter, camouflage, positions for equipment in nearby forests, and equipped strongholds. Unfortunately, I don't see all this. Not only me, but also the military personnel,” Butusov said.
