The West does not have such weapons that would guarantee victory for Ukraine. It is impossible to demand a lightning-fast offensive from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, because Russia is well prepared for it, having built a powerful line of defense.
British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons, whose term ends on September 1, stated this in an interview with the BBC, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
At the same time, the diplomat emphasized that delay in the offensive does not play into Ukraine’s hands.
“The option that it is supposedly possible to give the Ukrainians some kind of correct set of weapons, and then they will oust the Russians, is in principle impossible. In any case, this will happen slowly.
The Minister of Defense says that this is a marathon, not a sprint, and international media reports about the counter-offensive do not play into his hands here, because they sometimes try to give him triumphs, as was the case with the liberation of the Kharkov region,” the diplomat said.
“But this phase from the very beginning was not like the liberation of the Kharkov region, simply because it is a huge territory, because Russia was well entrenched in these places. Therefore, I actually do not agree that the counteroffensive does not achieve results.
It achieves results, there are many tactical achievements. But this will take a lot of time, and time is not on Ukraine’s side and the Ukrainians know this,” Simmons said.
