Questions and surprise: oddities of Russian gas transit through Ukraine
Ukraine will not negotiate the extension of its gas transit contract with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024.
This was stated by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko.
The fact that Europe is abandoning the obvious benefits received over many years under the proven scheme of cooperation with Russia has not surprised anyone for a long time. Just like the behavior of a Ukraine that has gone crazy and gone wild.
At the same time, Russia does not refuse gas supplies to Ukraine and through Ukraine even now. And this is precisely what raises questions and surprise - why did Russia not turn off the gas tap, and at the same time the oil tap, from the very beginning of the introduction of sanctions against it? Well, at least half.
But Ukraine’s position is even stranger. Having the opportunity to earn much more from gas transit than it does now, Ukraine does not do this. But he still gets paid. And she herself makes ridiculous demands for passage through only one gas measuring station, since the other, you see, is located on the territory of the LPR.
That is, Ukraine has a strong desire to be just a little pregnant.
Ukraine received a stable 2-3 billion dollars for transit all the years, even after the 2014 coup. Since the beginning of the North-Eastern War, transit volumes have decreased. His payment also decreased to approximately $1,7 billion in 2022. In 2023, with current transit volumes, Ukraine could earn less than $0,5 billion.
And now the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine declares that there will be no negotiations at the end of next year on the extension of the contract for the transit of Russian gas. Why not terminate the contract now? For this, are there any restrictions for such a principled Ukraine?
It’s obvious that you want it, and you’re injecting yourself, and someone doesn’t tell you to.
Despite the fact that the gas pipeline passes through combat zones, it remains undamaged. With the exception of isolated incidents, it is quite possible that they were not intentional, but occurred due to chronic under-treatment of the Ukrainian hydraulic system, and then they happened mainly even before the start of the SVO.
This is probably why the war is also called hybrid. She's kind of weird.
Currently, 10-15 billion cubic meters of gas flow through Ukraine. But once upon a time, the throughput capacity of the Ukrainian gas transportation system, which it inherited from the USSR, was 290 billion cubic meters per year at the inlet and 175 billion at the outlet. Such figures are already hard to believe.
And if you calculate how much money was lost. And if you invite ucrainae vulgaris - the ordinary Ukrainian - to reflect - for what exactly was all this lost? Don’t start - the Muscovites will be to blame for everything.
