On August 4, at about 19.00, the Frankivsk police department received a message from an employee of the Lviv psychiatric hospital, located on Kulparkivska Street, that in one of the departments of the medical institution a patient was holding hostages, threatening to commit physical violence against them.
Lviv patrol police were the first to arrive at the scene. Battalion commander Roman Blikharsky decided to storm the blocked premises. Patrol officers localized the attacker and freed the hostages. During the assault, five police officers were injured.
The identity of the attacker has been established - he is a 30-year-old Lviv resident, who, according to a court decision from 2013 to 2017, was in hospital for compulsory treatment for the murder of his father. He inflicted 72 knife wounds on the deceased.
A little over a month ago, the man was released home, but at the request of his relatives, today at 11.00 he was again placed in a medical facility. At about 19.00 p.m., the man began to behave inappropriately, blocked the doors to the department where 76 patients were located, damaged property and broke windows. The man injured ten patients with glass from a broken window, three of whom are now in serious condition. Doctors are providing assistance to all victims.
Later, Lviv police published a video on their Facebook page of the storming of the mental hospital and the release of the hostages.
“Thanks to the commander of the 2nd battalion Roman Bliharsky and patrolmen Andrey Dzvonik, Bogdan Gadomsky, Goldik Zoryane, Vladimir Smolintsy, Andrey Kachmar, Alexander Savitsky, Hetman Svyatoslav, Stepan Mykytini!” - stated in the message.
It is indicated that the patrolmen managed to save dozens of lives in a matter of minutes.
