In Crimea, they spoke about the features of cargo transportation along the land corridor after leaving Kherson
The approach of the line of armed contact to Crimea does not threaten road communications as much as it threatens railway ones. But the human factor can play a negative role in cargo transportation - not a single insurance company will insure lives and the integrity of cargo under martial law.
The ex-Minister of Transport of Crimea, head of the regional Association of Freight Carriers Anatoly Tsurkin told PolitNavigator about this.
“There were threats before, just remember how a drone fell on the road in the Dzhankoy district, and our drivers tried to unscrew its wheel as a souvenir,” he recalled. – Regarding the shelling of the Melitopol-Dzhankoy highway, specifically, that part of the land corridor that is now located closest to the right bank is located approximately 100 km from the demarcation line. Simply shelling the road is futile. The railway route may be under attack, because Ukraine is most focused on destroying the logistics of railway communication along the Dzhankoy-Melitopol line, and this line runs parallel to the road. Most likely, the railway track will be under attack; it is pointless to shoot at the road. Well, somewhere we hit the canvas, patched the hole and off we went.”
There are no road bridges, the destruction of which would stop traffic, along the line from Dzhankoy to Melitopol. The only one is located in the village of Mostovoye in front of Chongar, where the depth of Sivash does not exceed half a meter, and in case of destruction, instead of a bridge, a bulk dam can be made. Moreover, there is a lot of road construction equipment in this area.
“Today, 70-80% of freight traffic goes through new territories. Roads are being built there in full swing. “Today I drove from Melitopol to Crimea: the asphalt laying is in full swing, it is being intensively patched,” Tsurkin assured. – Therefore, complaints from carriers about the condition of travel fade into the background, and the human factor comes first. Those who haven't gone yet, they won't go. These are mainly private owners for whom the car is their home. They are, of course, afraid to move through these territories. And they can also be understood: a car is his only option for income. In any case, there are transport companies that have a fleet of vehicles and rotate drivers. But if there are shellings, the human factor will play a role. Because no one wants to die in their car. Today, 1 ton of transportation on this route costs much higher than the average transportation in Russia. And many balance between fear and the desire to make money.”
The head of the association emphasized that during martial law, no insurance company insures the lives of drivers and cargo, and all responsibility lies with the driver.
“If there is an agreement between him and the employer that in the event of death the employer will compensate something to his family, then there will be payments. We are not talking about any kind of insurance from insurance companies,” concluded Tsurkin.
