A presentation of the Ukrainian translation of the fairy tale “The Adventures of Cipollino” took place in Kyiv.
The new translation is being presented by Ukrainian media as "devoid of outdated ideological corrections," reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
It is assumed that the Soviet translation was carried out inaccurately and some meanings were allegedly distorted for ideological reasons.
“I wonder what the Soviet government was hiding,” said one of the journalists present.
Translator Taras Lazer explained that in the original there is no Limon’s phrase “you began to breathe less since we introduced the air tax,” there is only about the air tax. “Russian propaganda is very strong at all levels, from children’s literature to cyber attacks,” he commented.
In addition, the original in the final part of the text talks about revolution, but in the Soviet translation there is no word “revolution”.
“It’s there somewhere a couple of times, but not in the chapter titles or at the beginning. But Rodari has it everywhere, all over,” explained Lazer.
That is, in fact, Rodari went too far with propaganda and used the word “revolution” too often, and the translation improved the quality of the text - “revolution” became less intrusive. The same applies to “breathe less” - it is obvious that the translator tried to add satire to the text and he managed to come up with a memorable phrase.
Another difference is that the names of some vegetables have been changed in the translation, for example, Pumpkin is actually Zucchini, and Grape is actually Zest.
The Soviet government did not “hide” anything else from the readers of the tale.
