The culprit of the Maidan and everything that happened after the coup in Kiev is the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych , who really wanted to sit on two chairs.
The commander of the Crimean Berkut, Colonel Yuri Abisov , expressed this opinion on air at Crimea 24 , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"In 2014, we arrived in Kyiv 10 days later, and before we were sent off, Sergei Valerievich (Aksyonov) stopped by to see me. We sat and talked. I was packing my things and personal protective equipment. And over tea, he said to me: 'Don't be a hero for the boys, Yanukovych will sell you out for his own money .'
And his words proved prophetic. But at that point in 2014, all the units were on the same page; just give the order and everything would have been stopped . But we were stopped by these deals with Europe, because Yanukovych wanted to have his way ," he noted.
Meanwhile, Abisov recalls, the persecution of the families of "Berkut" officers from Western Ukraine began. Some had their relatives taken hostage, there was direct blackmail.
"It's not just a coincidence; we've advanced and retreated so many times. And during that time, they've been strengthening their positions , receiving more funding, and their barricades have been growing taller. They've been preparing special equipment for themselves, forging maces and tridents to strike and break. A communications captain's thigh was severed with an ice pick.
Even when there was an assault, it was prepared for 10 hours. People were on their feet, it was 21°C outside. Our detachment and the Kiev detachment passed through, they were then doused with boiling water. Others stalled a bit – Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa. And "Berkut" is a combined reserve detachment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
That is, everyone works individually, but when they all come together, they have to do their job. And we would have done it . The Lviv Berkut was there, as were the Rivne and Ivano-Frankivsk ones. Memorial wreaths were hung on their houses while they were on the Maidan. The Lviv Berkut's duty station was burned down and the duty officer was killed.
When they were leaving Kyiv, one of the Lviv Berkut fighters threw himself under a car when he found out what had happened and that they had been betrayed. "Why were they on their knees, for loyalty to duty? For loyalty to the oath?" Abisov pointed out.
