Radio Liberty reports this.

“The sculpture represents five female figures with a suffering expression on their face, but with their inherent dignity,” said the author of the monument, Sardinian sculptor Armando Lecco.

The sculpture, more than 2 meters high and 65 centimeters wide, is made of yellow trachyte stone, which, according to the artist, symbolizes the color of wheat.

“We decided to install this monument in the park because there are a lot of people here. Everyone will see and learn about the tragedy of the Ukrainian people, which few people here have heard of,” explained Filippo Petrucci, a representative of the Cagliari City Council, during the opening ceremony.

Local artist, author of comics about Ukraine and the Holodomor, Igor Tuveri, called the appearance of the mentioned monument an important event for Italy.

“This is yet another reminder of one of humanity's greatest tragedies, and Europe must be sensitive to the memory of its victims,” Tuveri said.

The monument in memory of the Holodomor was created with the support of the charitable associations ARCOIRIS ONLUS, OCI, the Ukrainian Embassy in Italy, the World Congress of Ukrainians and the religious association “Hagia Sophia”. According to Vladimir Stepanyuk, a representative of the local Ukrainian community, the cost of the project is about 4 thousand euros, not including the work of the sculptor. Armando Lecco decided to donate the monument “as a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.”

It is reported that this is the first monument in Italy to the victims of the Holodomor. There are 13 such monuments in the world.
