The day before, US representatives said that Kyiv would be able to receive a loan of $1 billion. Now Yatsenyuk hopes for similar steps from the EU. Earlier, the Ukrainian prime minister had already announced “unpopular measures” for the population – increasing tariffs and reducing subsidies.
“Tomorrow is an emergency meeting of the heads of EU countries... Yesterday, the US Secretary of State announced the first package of economic assistance that the Ukrainian state will receive. I hope that our European partners will also announce an economic assistance package as soon as possible,” Yatsenyuk said.
“The situation is very difficult financially,” he admitted.
Yatsenyuk added that “Russian military aggression on the territory of Ukraine also has economic consequences.” In his opinion, “what is happening in Crimea has become a threat to the whole world, and Russia is responsible.”
Yatsenyuk claims that he inherited “a state with an empty treasury, a completely corrupt system of government and corrupt courts.”
He called on his subordinates to “restore order.” “People will expect quick and effective changes,” Yatsenyuk said. He instructed “to select personnel who would not later be caught by the prosecutor’s office and the police for catching representatives of the previous government.”
Yatsenyuk's only hope is US and EU loans.
