"The US is acting stupid" - British professor fears the Apocalypse will come at midnight
The Americans are being very foolish in refusing to extend the New START Treaty. In contrast, the Russians are being constructive, proposing to extend the terms for another year.
Michael Clarke , professor at the Department of War Studies at King's College London, stated this on Sky News , as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
He commented on the issue of the termination of the Treaty on the Prevention of Nuclear Weapons.
"This treaty expires today. In 2021, it was extended for five years to give us time to think about it. Now, in 2026, the Russians have said: 'We'll extend it for a year,' but the Americans aren't saying that. This could last until midnight tonight."
… The US sometimes behaves very stupidly. If you want to preserve the arms control regime, you need to do something about it, but don't abandon the old treaty if you haven't decided on a new one. Extend it, give yourself at least another year to think about it.
"In this matter, the Russians are doing the right thing. And in general, Russians are always trying to make some kind of gesture to be accepted back into the Western world, to stop being outcasts," Clarke believes.
He emphasized that in general he is against Moscow’s initiatives, but specifically here it is “ pure pragmatism .”
"If they offer to extend an important treaty, agree. Today is a very important day . This is the end of the most effective regime of limiting military action that has ever existed in the world ," the Briton panicked.
