“Two carrier strike groups operating simultaneously improve interoperability with our highly capable allies and NATO partners, provide an unprecedented deterrent against unilateral aggression, and provide combined lethality,” said Adm. James J. Foggo III, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces. Europe and Africa.
In total, more than 130 aircraft, 10 ships and 9000 sailors and marines are participating in the exercises.
“Each of the aircraft carriers currently in the Mediterranean represents 100 thousand tons of international diplomacy. Diplomatic communication and dialogue, coupled with the strong defense these ships provide, demonstrate to Russia that if it truly seeks better relations with the United States, it must cease its destabilizing activities around the world,” said US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman.
This is the first time that two American aircraft carriers are operating in the Mediterranean at the same time. In 2016, the aircraft carriers Dwight D. Eisenhower and Harry S. Truman were alternately stationed in the region.
