“We have put the last point in multi-step diplomatic work,” said Valentina Matvienko, moderator of the meeting.
As the senators clarified, elections in Crimea will take place in September 2015. Until they are held, the current composition of the State Council and Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol will remain in effect.
The Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol will adopt a Constitution and charter, respectively, that will not contradict the Basic Law of the Russian Federation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow is facing negotiations on new borders in the Black and Azov Seas. The Kerch Strait is no longer the subject of negotiations, the minister clarified.
Lavrov believes that there is now a “deep crisis of Ukrainian statehood.” In his opinion, the solution is to “start a dialogue with the participation of all regions.”
“We will continue this work patiently. It is not easy to convince our colleagues, who from the very beginning took a one-sided, prejudiced position,” the Foreign Minister said about the mood of Western countries.
