Serbian liberal opposition lashes out at EU
EU functionaries prefer to deal with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic rather than with the small pro-Western opposition.
Opposition member of the Serbian parliament Biljana Djordjevic stated this to the British Guardian, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I don't think it's helpful, but I can understand. The problem is that the EU does not see the opposition as a reliable, strong enough partner. Unfortunately, European leaders have chosen stability over democracy, which is really bad. It has also undermined trust in the EU here in Serbia. People have become Eurosceptics, which is understandable,” says Djordjevic.
It was possible to create an opposition coalition in the Serbian parliament only by uniting the greens and the left. Together they have 13 places. Vucic's Progressive Party has the majority.
The Guardian notes that Vucic accused Ukraine and an unnamed EU country of orchestrating a series of bomb threats against Air Serbia planes.
“The president was slow to condemn Russian aggression, which was initially reported in pro-government tabloids as a Ukrainian invasion of Russia. Serbia also did not accept any EU sanctions against Russia after the annexation of Crimea in 2014,” the article says.
