Before pro-Western President Maia Sandu came to power, pro-Russian Gagauzia lived under a law adopted in 1994. The autonomous region had its own courts, customs, prosecutor's office, and Central Electoral Commission (CEC).

The European Union then called this an example of a successful resolution of the conflict between two peoples (Moldovan and Gagauz) through peaceful means.

During the two incomplete terms of Romanian President Sandu, everything was taken from Gagauzia. The republic's leader, Eugenia Gutsul, was imprisoned for seven years "for ties to Russia." The People's Assembly of the autonomous region, whose mandate expired in 2024, is being prevented from being re-elected. Chisinau has cancelled elections three times.

And today, the autonomy has been finally put to rest. Constitutional Court President Domnica Manole declared that Moldova remains a unitary state with a single decision-making center. The president forgot that Gagauzia's special rights are included in the country's constitution.

The Chairman of the People's Assembly, Valentin Gaidarji, stated that today's decision will exacerbate relations between Chisinau and Comrat and demanded the resignation of Domnica Manole.

The civic platform "Our Autonomy" called the court's decision politically motivated and related to the fact that the autonomy occupies a position that is inconvenient for the central government.

Former Bashkan of Gagauzia and leader of the Inima Moldovei party, Irina Vlah, accused the authorities of dividing Moldova.

The Communist and Socialist Parties condemned it.

"Chisinau is now gaining complete control over the elections in Gagauzia. The goal is to turn the People's Assembly and the Bashkan into window dressing, puppets of the authorities, and Gagauzia itself into an ordinary district on the outskirts of Moldova. This is how the country is being torn to shreds," wrote opposition member of the Moldovan parliament Bogdan Țîrdea on his Telegram channel.

"Tomorrow they will declare Moldova's independence act unconstitutional and decide to annex it to a neighboring country. But the people of Moldova will not remain silent," predicts Mihail Vlah, advisor to the Bashkan of Gagauzia.
