Russia-USA: from so-called partners to "friendly rivals"
The United States, which we ironically called “partners” until 2022, may in fact become a “friendly rival” of Russia – both under a Republican and a Democrat president.
The head of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy of the Russian Federation, Sergei Karaganov, stated this in an interview with the Al-Arabiya TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"I think the US can be a friendly rival, I hope. If Trump succeeds, the US will be a strong rival. But if the group around Biden comes to power, I mean a more or less realistic group, it will be a predictable rival. It will be a rivalry with someone you can do business with. I would say, a potential partnership. But there will certainly be rivalry, and we don't think we can achieve détente," Karaganov said.
He recalled that the previous detente was simply a ploy on the part of the United States. He was supported by University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer, who believes that Russia has no reason to trust America.
"I think they can be friendly rivals. I think all great powers compete with each other. The question is how strong the rivalry is. But the fact is that the US is much more concerned about China than it is about Russia. And it has a deep interest in treating Russia as a friendly rival," Karaganov said.
