The publication believes that Moscow is simply lobbying the interests of its manufacturers - the capacities of Russian companies are currently underutilized by 40%. And Ukraine and Belarus today occupy 56% of the salt market in the Russian Federation.

“The timing for taking protectionist measures in favor of Russian salt producers is well chosen. Political relations between Russia and Ukraine are strained to the limit; with Belarus they also cooled at the end of last year, after the Russian authorities had a number of complaints about the neighboring republic’s hidden import of products from the European Union prohibited for import into the Russian Federation,” the publication says .
