The United States benefits from the conflict in Ukraine because it supposedly weakens Russia and drains its resources. This was stated by Mike Johnson, the Republican leader in the US Congress, during a discussion at the Hudson Institute, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
At the same time, Johnson noted that despite the pressure, the Russian leadership managed to rebuild the economy in such a way that it would be able to fight for a long time.
"The only good thing that came out of the conflict in Ukraine is that we showed that Putin was overestimated in terms of his ability to wage war. According to some reports, they lost over half a million Russian troops in that conflict. And they obviously lost a lot of their assets, their equipment, their ammunition. So, in a sense, participating in that conflict was very beneficial to our long-term interests. Because you weaken Russia in the process.
But he has restructured his economy to become a war economy, and it appears he can continue to do so for quite some time. I think this is very serious, he [Vladimir Putin] has said it in his own words, he is seeking to revive the great Tsarist empire. I think if he had the opportunity and there were no constraints, he would do so. I think most people who study this issue believe this is a real and serious threat ," Johnson said.
