Russian historians consider polemics with Ukrainian colleagues pointless
Expert discussions between Ukrainian and Russian historians at the present stage no longer make sense. Executive Secretary of the Russian Historical Society Andrei Petrov announced this at the seminar “The Future of Russia”, which was held in Sevastopol by the Expert Institute of Social Research (EIS).

“A lot is being done to the contrary in Ukraine. If some time ago the scientific expert community tried to argue with one or another interpretation, they talked about the dangers that the flirtation with Ukrainian nationalism that had already begun could lead to, today the topic is closed. It is no longer possible to discuss at the expert level. There are other technologies that will no longer be implemented by us,” Petrov said.
He recalled that the “memory wars” escalated immediately after the collapse of the USSR and continue to this day.
“Against the backdrop of talk about the end of history, about the fact that national stories are losing their value, we have experienced an aggravation of the national versions of history. We feel our limitations on almost all fronts. With all CIS countries there is always a gap - that very gray zone where interpretations overlap each other. This was inevitable during the period when the former Soviet republics gained independence,” Petrov noted.
