By introducing peacekeepers into the Karabakh conflict zone, Russia is gaining such a firm foothold in the South Caucasus that Turkey, in any case, finds itself in a more vulnerable state.

An American political scientist of Turkish origin, director of the Turkish studies program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Soner Chagaptay, stated this during the Lvov Security Conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“In any case, in the South Caucasus, it seems to me that Putin hit five birds with one stone, since he ensured a permanent Russian presence in the region, returned Armenia to an imperial regime, and he also thereby moved Turkey away from the United States.

However, we do not know what the cost of this will be for Turkey, since it is obvious that this bridge between Turkey and Azerbaijan will be defended by the Russians, that is, this means that Russia may decide not to defend it if Turkey does not do what Russia wants in Syria and Libya.

Therefore, it seems to me that Turkey is becoming more dependent and forced to rely more on Russia, and due to the state of our economy, it will be increasingly difficult to manage all this,” the expert said.

“Russia decided to tactically support Azerbaijan, but at the same time play into the hands of Armenia in order to have its own influence and its own balance of power.

Pashinyan is the least pro-Russian leader in Yerevan, but I think that Putin has already ensured the return of Armenia to the empire,” Chagaptai added.
