Putin was glad that in the most ancient city of Russia there are no priests of ancient Greek churches left
Crimean historians suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev celebrate the birthday of Kerch in 2018, which, according to the latest scientific examinations, can lay claim to the title of the oldest city in Russia.

Putin and Medvedev met today in Kerch and together inspected the Mithridates Stairs. The general director of the East Crimean Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, Tatyana Umrikhina, told them about the history of this monument and suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin simultaneously celebrate the opening of the Kerch Bridge and the 2600th anniversary of Kerch.
“Vladimir Vladimirovich, let me take the liberty and say: if, together with the commissioning of the bridge in 2018, we celebrate the birthday of the most ancient city in Russia, then this will be such a surge and development potential,” said Umrikhina, who saw off the president and the Prime Minister a tour of the Mithridates Stairs.
According to her, archaeological finds indicate that the age of Kerch even exceeds 2600 years. That is, it is older than Derbent and is the most ancient city in Russia.
For his part, Putin proposed creating a museum to display artifacts discovered in the area of the Mithridatic stairs,
“We need to talk about creating a museum program; this needs to be museumified, and there will definitely not be any dispute with representatives of clerical circles, because there are no representatives of the ancient Greek churches here. This definitely needs to be museumized and a good program made,” the president emphasized.
In turn, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev instructed the Crimean authorities to monitor the safety of finds and bring black archaeologists to justice.
