Kyiv, September 07 (PolitNavigator, Yuri Kovalchuk) – President Obama, it seems, has not yet realized that Putin has outwitted him in the Ukrainian crisis. The US President is acting as if he still has something to say on this issue.

The discrepancy between reality and the president’s statements once again shows that Obama has lost touch with the real world, writes the American magazine The National Interest.

Russia has enormous influence on Ukraine. All the more strange is Obama’s reaction to Putin’s proposal, which Poroshenko readily accepted. It seems that the US President is equating words with real possibilities: “No, a political settlement cannot be achieved until Russia stops tanks, troops and weapons behind the separatists, insisting on the independence of this region from Ukraine.”

In the context of recent events in Ukraine, these can hardly be considered the words of a serious person. In fact, real political agreements can be reached when the parties understand the fundamental inequality of opportunity. Poroshenko apparently understands how inferior Ukraine is to Russia. Obama apparently does not.

It was clear from the outset that the West's interest in Ukraine did not come close to matching that of Russia, which has included Ukraine in its sphere of influence for the past three and a half centuries and views the relationship as critical to national security.

In this regard, the question arises: if we are not too worried about this conflict, and it is already clear to the whole world that we will not fight over it, if Moscow’s influence clearly exceeds ours, then why all this controversy?

Chatting at a time when you are being outplayed is not only a sign of weakness. This makes the president look confused, as if he doesn't really understand what's going on. This is clearly not the impression that a great nation should create.
