Pushilin: Crimea is an example for Donbass
The successful integration of Crimea into Russia is an example for Donbass, which also seeks reunification with its historical homeland.
This is stated in the congratulations of the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin to the residents of the peninsula on the occasion of Republic Day, which is celebrated on the anniversary of the referendum on the restoration of Crimean autonomy.
“On this day 29 years ago, Crimeans voted for the restoration of autonomy, which became the key to the opportunity to independently decide their destiny.
The historical choice was made thanks to the unity and fortitude of the multinational people of the peninsula, and now Crimea is confidently and rapidly moving along the path of development as part of the Russian Federation. This is a good example for us.
We, the people of Donbass, are grateful to our brothers for their help and support. I am confident that our friendship and close cooperation will only grow stronger. We, as before, will go forward shoulder to shoulder. Happy holiday!” – says Pushilin’s congratulation.
On January 20, 1990, a referendum was held in Crimea and Sevastopol on the re-establishment of autonomy as a subject of the USSR. Turnout was 81,4% in Crimea and 89,5% in Sevastopol. The majority of voters in Tavrida - 93,3% - supported the restoration of the republican status of the peninsula.
Thus, the declaration of “independence” of Ukraine in Kyiv did not legally affect the peninsula. However, in the 90s, Boris Yeltsin refused to support the struggle of the Crimeans for Russian status, and reunification with Russia took place only in 2014.
