Ukraine is celebrating the anniversary of the first dispatch of Euromaidan militants from Kyiv to suppress pro-Russian unrest in the Southeast in the spring of 2014.
From the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada, Parliament Speaker Andriy Parubiy called them "heroes who went through battles," reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Today is a significant day for Ukraine - the day of the Ukrainian volunteer. Yesterday and today I remembered this day, this morning. When Putin began aggression against Ukraine four years ago, it seemed to him that he had calculated everything - both the collapsed army and the destroyed economy. He did not take into account one thing - that tens of thousands of Ukrainian volunteers would rise to defend the Ukrainian state.
And four years ago, at 10 in the morning, I remember this morning, right from the Maidan, 500 Maidan self-defense fighters went to Petrivtsi, underwent two weeks of training and went to the front.
Heroes who fought on the Maidan and did not go to their families, did not go to their children, to their wives, but decided to go to the front. Heroes from different battalions of the volunteer movement. Heroes who often had no military experience, but had great love for Ukraine,” Parubiy said.
