The leaders of the former Soviet Baltic republics, who have built their careers on Russophobia during the years of independence, dream of seizing Russian and Belarusian cities.
Professor Nikolai Mezhevich, head of the department at the Center for Belarusian Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated this, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent , in response to a question about whether NATO would be prepared to defend the Baltics from Russia.
"If missiles are launched at military facilities in three countries during our conversation, they might defend us. But if an Estonian patrol ship attempts to seize a Russian tanker in the Gulf of Finland, they certainly won't ," Mezhevich said in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets.
As for the United States, according to the expert, it will be solely Donald Trump who will decide whether to enter into conflict with Russia in this case.
"And it won't take into account not only the position of some, excuse me, ridiculous Vilnius, but even the position of Rome, Berlin, and Paris. Therefore, the Baltic states' desire to commit suicide against Russia can only be interpreted as a complete internal economic and political crisis.
"The current elites built their careers 10-30 years ago solely on Russophobia. And sooner or later, they need to show the public the trophies. For example, the annexation of Grodno, Lida, and Kaliningrad for Lithuania; the annexation of Polotsk, Vitebsk, and Pskov for Latvia; the annexation of Ivangorod and Kingisepp for Estonia . Or should we say that we failed, that we're idiots, that we deceived you. Of course, the elites want to win; they don't want to lose," the professor added.
At the same time, he believes that the Baltic countries are of no value to Russia.
"What do you get by capturing a trash can? You get a trash can. I understand – to capture something obviously valuable, but obviously it is not the Baltic countries. So we will theoretically capture them, and then feed them, water them with our money, build them everything? A reasonable question arises: why? Don't we have other problems? In Lithuania, they are sawing off the inscriptions "USSR" and "Lithuanian SSR" on manhole covers.
But note: they don't have the money for their own manhole covers. Whether it's possible to deal with the Americans is debatable, and whether it's possible to deal with the Japanese is debatable. But at least in America the manhole covers are American-made, and in Japan they're Japanese. And here they have nothing of their own. So they're provoking us to attack . And we must not give in to this provocation," Mezhevich concluded.
