Kyiv, February 23 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – It will take at least six months to organize a UN peacekeeping mission if such a decision is made. This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by professor of the Kiev-Mohyla Academy Vladimir Vasilenko, formerly the representative of Ukraine in the International Court of Justice during a dispute with Romania regarding the ownership of the sea shelf in the area of Zmeiny Island.

“It will take about six months to deploy such a mission. The process of consultations has already begun, as far as I understand, the statements of our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President, Sergeev, our representative of Ukraine to the UN. These consultations must take place between members of the Security Council, and they must reach agreement on the mandate of the mission, all the conditions for the functioning of the mission,” the diplomat said.

In his opinion, in the time required for the entire procedure for bringing in peacekeepers, the Russian army “can reach Simferopol.”

Such a mission is rather disadvantageous for Ukraine, he believes. “The very presence of peacekeepers indicates that there is a frozen conflict in the country. This is a big negative,” he said. The positive is that the presence of peacekeepers can prevent Russia from seizing new territories in Ukraine.

According to Vladimir Vasilenko, the best option for the mission would be to include in its mandate a clause on establishing control on the Ukrainian-Russian border.
