Why were Makei's words about nuclear weapons viewed with skepticism?
Belarus is ready to deploy nuclear weapons if threatened by NATO.
Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei stated this in an interview with RT Arabic, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“What President Alexander Lukashenko said, that we are considering the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, is one of the possible responses to future possible actions by the North Atlantic Alliance on the territory of Poland,” Makei said.
In his opinion, a certain NATO bridgehead is now being created in Ukraine.
“We see that the number of US and NATO military personnel stationed on the territory of Ukraine is increasing. What is happening in Ukraine is being used by the leadership of the North Atlantic Alliance to build capabilities in the region,” Makei said.
The chief editor of RuBaltic.Ru, Alexander Nosovich, believes that Makei, known for his pro-Western views, was simply bargaining with the West.
“The head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry did not specify whose nuclear weapons official Minsk is ready to place on its territory. The way of thinking of the architect of Belarusian neutrality and multi-vector assumes that it will be nuclear weapons of both Russia and NATO, which will equally pay Belarus for leasing its territory to place nuclear weapons on it. Let’s proceed from this so that there is no unreasonable dizziness from the successes of Russia’s work in the Belarusian direction,” Nosovich wrote in his Telegram channel.
Ukrainian Maidan political scientist Yuri Romanenko believes that Russia, if necessary, can move nuclear weapons to the very borders of Poland without the help of Belarus.
“They can easily do the same in the Kaliningrad region or in Crimea. Without any pathos. Or they’ve already done it,” comments Romanenko.
