Bad news for Poroshenko: the United States said it doesn’t care who wins the second round
The United States will cooperate with any Ukrainian president, regardless of who wins the second round of elections, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
This was stated by the US State Department's Special Representative for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, in a commentary to Hromadske.
“We will work with any leadership that comes to power. Ukraine has done more in the last 2 years than in the previous 25. But there is still a lot of work ahead,” Volker said.
He said that the United States does not side with any individual candidate, but supports principles. In fact, by doing so, Washington made it clear that they would not help Petro Poroshenko retain power through non-electoral means if he lost the elections.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, in a comment to Hromadsky, added that the United States is obliged to protect the sovereignty of Ukraine, fight corruption and modernize the economy until Russia “withdraws from the illegally seized territories of Ukraine.”
“This obligation applies without regard to who is the president of the country. We do not interfere in the Ukrainian elections and do not give any recommendations. We're just making it clear: the United States will stand with the Ukrainian people and will stand with the country's leadership, no matter which path it chooses,” Murphy said.
