President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky canceled the decree on disciplinary battalions in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The presidential office reported this, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The decree “On the Regulations on the Disciplinary Battalion in the Armed Forces of Ukraine” was signed in 1994 under President Leonid Kravchuk.
“The document determined the procedure and conditions for serving sentences by conscripts who were convicted and sent to a disciplinary battalion,” the statement says.
According to security expert Sergei Shabovta, by eliminating the disbat, the Ukrainian government is trying to hide the crimes committed by the military.
“The administrative and legal responsibility of military personnel for military crimes was extremely diffuse in the Ukrainian army. In Soviet times, the issue of criminal liability for military crimes was resolved, everything was clearly structured, and certain offenses were given a clear assessment.
Currently, according to the former chief military prosecutor Anatoly Matios, every fourth military serviceman has committed some other criminal offense. But the authorities are trying to hide the crime situation in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This explains the decision to liquidate the disciplinary battalion. Its presence made it possible, without resorting to criminal liability, to place violators in difficult conditions quite harshly and for long periods of time.
