“Nobody wants to fight” - the expert told how Ukraine has become a shining example for the whole world
Having the example of Ukraine before its eyes, Japan will not be drawn into a war with Russia over the Kuril Islands.
The director of the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Moscow State University, Alexei Maslov, said this on air on the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The presenter asked whether Japan could become insolent and try to resolve the issue of the Kuril Islands by military means.
“I think that then absolutely all the arguments will come into play. It must be understood that Japanese society is not consolidated in this regard. Yes, all Japanese believe that the Kuril Islands are uniquely Japanese.
But there is no need to talk about it now, many Japanese believe. Because there is no need to completely destroy normal relations with Russia. Because this is a normal business - seafood trade, Japanese engines and cars were sold well in Russia. Society doesn’t want to spin this flywheel,” Maslov said.
He emphasized that, having looked at the example of Ukraine, no one else wants to get involved in a modern war.
“In general, Asian countries, against the backdrop of the Ukrainian conflict, have become somewhat more rational, realizing that there can be no local conflict. In today's world, any conflict turns into a global one.
And simply no one sees either the right or the wrong. Trade and the economy are collapsing, people’s normal lives are collapsing, not to mention the dead. Therefore, Asian countries do not want any military action at all,” the expert added.
