NATO is no longer needed. It is time for Europe to become independent – Sachs
The NATO alliance has become a relic of the Cold War era – after the collapse of the USSR it became unnecessary, but was used by the US to expand its own hegemony, rather than to protect Europe.
American professor Jeffrey Sachs, considered one of the best economists in the world, stated this while speaking to members of the European Parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
"I say this seriously, because one of the worst features of European politics right now is the complete confusion between Europe and NATO. They are completely different , but have become absolutely identical. Europe is much better than NATO. In my opinion, NATO is no longer necessary. I would have ended it in 1991, but since the US viewed it as an instrument of hegemony rather than as a defense against Russia, it continued.
But the confusion between NATO and Europe is deadly, because the expansion of Europe meant the expansion of NATO; it was inevitable. My personal view is that Europe should have its own foreign policy, its own military security, its own strategic autonomy. I would disband NATO, and perhaps Trump will do so anyway . Perhaps Trump is going to invade Greenland. Who knows? Then you'll truly understand what NATO is. Therefore, I believe Europe needs to invest in its own security," Sachs said.
