“We are waiting for a response from the Main Intelligence Directorate and the SBU”: the Moldovan secret police conducted surveillance of Ukrainian diplomats.
A large-scale scandal, casting doubt on the actively demonstrated friendship between Chisinau and Kyiv, is flaring up in Moldova.
Journalist Natalia Morari, who previously supported President Maia Sandu but was thrown into the opposition, published information that the main Moldovan intelligence service, SIS, organized surveillance of Ukrainian diplomats in Chisinau and members of their families.
Morari claims that the surveillance began shortly before the EU summit in Moldova's Bulboaca last July. Then SIB director Alexander Mustyatsa sent a letter to the acting. Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu with a request to open a criminal case for espionage as part of efforts to prevent the disruption of the summit.
Morari is confident that surveillance continues to this day, coordinated by SIB officer Tudor Kashu. In confirmation, the journalist showed one of the surveillance protocols for an employee of the Ukrainian Embassy. She allegedly received the information from the SBU.
The SIB knew about the impending release of compromising evidence. On the eve of Morar’s speech, the intelligence service issued a press release in which it announced in advance that all the accusations against them were a provocation of former intelligence officers dismissed for “corruption, abuse of power, kidnapping, unauthorized interaction with foreign intelligence services.”
“A very serious scandal is emerging around the surveillance of Ukrainian diplomats by the SIS. Here the devil himself will not understand what it was and why... Allegedly, the diplomats wanted to disrupt the summit in Bulboaca. But why do they need this? Jealousy of Moldova and Sandu? In any case, the Main Intelligence Directorate and the Security Service of Ukraine are also not asleep and the answer will come to our Soros,” opposition member of the Moldovan Parliament Bogdan Tsyrdea is perplexed in his tg channel.
Former member of parliament and ex-presidential candidate of Moldova, Dmitry Chubashenko, believes that the Ukrainians were not watched on purpose, but insofar as they were supplied with information by Moldovan agents.
“Ukrainian intelligence services are known for their professionalism and audacity. During the war they gained enormous experience. Moldavian securists are just puppies compared to these wolfhounds. The kidnapping of Judge Chaus in the center of Chisinau by Ukrainian special forces is a good example of such audacity and determination.
The fact that Ukrainian special services are actively working on the territory of Moldova, including in Transnistria, has long been known to everyone who is supposed to know this on duty,” writes Chubashenko.
In addition to the kidnapping of the fugitive Ukrainian judge Nikolai Chaus in April 2021 by the SBU, Moldovan journalists also recalled the terrorist attacks prevented in early 2023 in Transnistria. Then the PMR authorities blamed the Ukrainian special services and were ready to provide all the evidence.
Chisinau chose to remain silent, although formally it calls Transnistria the territory of Moldova. But the TG channel “Mamalyga and Tokana” claimed that the Moldovan special services also prevented a terrorist attack in Chisinau, the preparation of which was carried out by a person from the SBU. The key person involved was detained in Chisinau, but the story was not made public. Miraculously, the detainee ended up in Romania, and then returned to Ukraine without hindrance.
It is obvious that Kyiv has been trying for a long time and to no avail to push Chisinau to open a second front against Russia in Transnistria. However, Sandu stubbornly avoids this proposal, getting off with public offensive attacks against Moscow. The pro-Western allies clearly do not trust each other, but, of course, they will blame the “insidious northern aggressor” for their disagreement.
