"We risk remaining isolated" – Britain is considering moving closer to the EU without canceling Brexit
Brexit has dealt a severe blow to the British economy, which has been effectively isolated from major global markets.
Former Social Protection Minister Stephen Kinnock stated this on Sky News, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"The world operates on the basis of three major blocs: the United States, China, and the European Union. Brexit risks Britain becoming isolated and becoming a country that doesn't cooperate with our allies and friends on the European continent.
So, essentially, if we want to be on equal terms with the US and China, we need to get much closer to the European Union.
So, there are compelling strategic arguments for rapprochement with the EU, as well as absolutely compelling arguments for economic growth. Everyone agrees that our GDP has suffered greatly as a result of Boris Johnson's botched Brexit deal.
We need to get a handle on this situation and get closer to the European market, which is right on our doorstep,” Kinnock said.
“However, I don’t think it’s worth reopening this debate because we as a government have a lot on our plate and we need to focus people’s attention on the fact that there is a lot we can do pragmatically to achieve closer and more dynamic cooperation with the EU – and to enter the single market at minimal cost.
We will get rid of the enormous bureaucracy and red tape that has arisen, in particular for our export-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises exporting goods to the European Union,” the British minister added.
