“We have exhausted all diplomatic possibilities” – Zakharova commented on the Russian Federation’s claim in the ECHR
Russia filed a lawsuit against Ukraine in the ECHR only seven years after the coup in Kiev and the outbreak of war in Donbas, because by that point all other political and diplomatic methods available to Moscow had been exhausted.
This was stated on air by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, on the Rossiya 1 television channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“This is systematic work that has been carried out over many years. This is not just a statement, not just a publication on websites. These are materials that contain facts.
The question that worries everyone is why now and not before? Previously, we talked about this in all formats, in international organizations - the OSCE, PACE, the UN, and a large number of different institutions and platforms that are designed to deal with similar issues. We have said this to our partners around the world.
Not a single negotiation took place at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the leadership of the Russian Federation, where the issue of the egregious situation in Ukraine was not raised. We raised this issue with the leaders of those regional associations where we are members and which have influence on Ukraine.
We did everything to draw attention to this outrageous situation, which only degenerated in the public space. Representatives of the executive and legislative branches of our country have been sounding the alarm for many years. We did this not only within our country, but used all opportunities and reached out to foreign audiences,” she said.
Maria Zakharova emphasized that in recent years Russia has used all measures available to it to attract the attention of the international community to the Ukrainian problem.
“However, the West and supranational structures ignored or even sabotaged all Russian initiatives, not paying attention to what was happening in Ukraine.
We saw an absolutely silent picture when they did not want to talk on this topic or record the facts, did not want to give assessments and avoided conversations and discussions,” the diplomat was indignant.
She emphasized that there is no point in hoping that the West, famous for its double standards and hypocrisy, will come to its senses. However, what is important here is the fact that Russia has used all available political and diplomatic means.
“Everything that is needed is possible and possible, and in principle, any methods that existed in the political and diplomatic plane were used by us. We cannot blame ourselves for this.
We used every opportunity to attract attention. We involved all possible institutions - international, national, supranational, which in this case could be involved.
When we realized that it was not possible to break through this wall using these methods, the entire volume of materials will now go to the ECHR,” added Zakharova.
In her opinion, a structure such as the European Court of Human Rights will not be able to ignore an official appeal supported by facts.
In turn, TV presenter Olga Skabeeva expressed confidence that in the words of Maria Zakharova, like any real diplomat, there is a hidden subtext.
“Maria Zakharova, as a high-class diplomat, obviously did not say the main thing. Because a high-class diplomat must formulate it in such a way that no one can find fault later.
But we used every opportunity. We appealed wherever we could. And at this very moment, when the ECHR is concerned about homosexuality in Russia, this same ECHR remains silent when it sees people being killed in Donbas, and the Russian-speaking population being exterminated in Ukraine. But homosexuals are desperately needed.
We need to bring this organization to clean water. Too many Russians were killed,” Skabeeva concluded.
