Yesterday, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk confirmed plans for large-scale privatization of state-owned enterprises. At the same time, he specifically indicated that Russia would not be allowed to privatize.
On the same day, Ukrainian Minister of Fuel and Energy Volodymyr Demchyshyn announced the imminent sale of Centrenergo, three regional power companies, and several state-owned mines. The minister indicated that energy companies from the EU and the US had expressed interest in the purchase. "They are positive about the opportunity to participate in the privatization of Ukrainian assets. They are currently interested in electricity distribution, regional power companies, regional gas companies, and Centrenergo," the minister said . He added that well-known companies such as Chevron, Shell, ExxonMobil, ENI, and RWE have expressed interest in Ukrainian energy assets.
Vladimir Demchishin also stated: “Some mines will be put up for sale within a month or a month and a half. We invite all companies that are interested in this. We have large and important power plants, such as Centrenergo... There are also at least three state-owned oblenergo companies in Kharkov, Zaporozhye and Khmelnitsky, which will be put up for sale,” said Vladimir Demchishin.
It is noteworthy that the state association of the largest thermal power plants “Centrenergo” is a strategically important object for the state. This includes Uglegorsk (Donetsk region, now DPR), Tripolskaya (Kiev region) and Zmievskaya (Kharkov region) thermal power plants. The latter two provide electricity and heat to the country’s two largest cities and several regions. At the same time, the Uglegorsk thermal power plant is now controlled by the Donetsk People's Republic.
