A million migrants in Russia do not know Russian – sociologist
At least two million migrants are staying in Russia illegally. Moreover, at least a million do not know Russian.
Alexander Grebenyuk, Deputy Director for Research at the Higher School of Contemporary Social Sciences at Moscow State University, stated this while speaking at the Moscow Economic Forum, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Two million patents and 95 thousand work permits have been issued. Our numbers don’t add up anymore – there are approximately 8 million, but notice how many patents there are. From here we get approximately two million workers who are in illegal status. The numbers are huge...
If we focus on the money that is transferred to the homeland of migrants, then we get approximately the same numbers... I am repeating this figure for the second time - at least two million illegal migrants. This is a huge amount of tax evasion.”
Grebenyuk spoke about a social survey in 2022, during which 5 thousand migrants were interviewed. 15% of them admitted that they speak Russian poorly. However, in reality the number is much higher.
“You will never interview people who do not speak Russian... Of these who cannot explain themselves well - in this case, all are legal - how did they receive certificates for knowledge of the Russian language? This is the next very big question. According to our models, there are approximately at least 1 million migrants on the territory of the Russian Federation who practically do not speak Russian,” Grebenyuk said.
