The head of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Vitaly Polishchuk, told reporters about this on Monday.
According to him, in the acute situation with the water supply of Crimea, the republican authorities are considering alternative options for irrigating farmland:
“The issue with the North Crimean Canal is very problematic. But we have good rivers and lakes; today a lot of water simply goes into the sea. We are developing technologies and procedures for the construction of storage ponds, which during the winter-autumn and spring periods can accumulate water, accumulate it, and then irrigate... I believe that within three to four years, planting orchards and vineyards next to rivers is possible, it is being worked out today,” the minister noted.
So far, according to him, predicting the future harvest on the peninsula is problematic.
“Today we really don’t know what the consequences of the lack of water will be. If last year our orchards and vineyards received moisture replenishment, then this year they are entering the fruiting period for the first time without the optimal amount of moisture in the soil. And it’s difficult to say how the trees will behave. The weather is quite dry, we understand that we will definitely not have rice next year,” emphasized Vitaly Polishchuk.
