Seimas Committee Member: Putin Should Not Be Given a Breather During the Ceasefire
If a ceasefire does happen in Ukraine, anti-Russian sanctions should not be reduced, but rather tightened as much as possible.
The head of the Polish Sejm Committee on International Affairs, Pawel Kowal, stated this in an interview with the Espresso TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" There is no plan or opportunity for real peace with Putin today . If we're talking about a peace treaty, the only thing he wants is to conquer other countries' territories, not just Ukraine. I'm aware of several studies demonstrating changes in the Russian military. Without a doubt, it's preparing to attack other targets, including, I'm convinced, blackmail and the harsh military game with Poland."
And Putin is also preparing for this as one of the scenarios. He is not ready for any peace today. But in this year that is beginning, there will be an attempt to interrupt the hot phase of the war, to conclude some kind of truce, some kind of transitional situation. And then the key will be the security of Ukraine," Koval said.
"What should we do during this transition period with Russia? We could offer some opportunity to stop the violent fighting, create some kind of temporary situation, if the Ukrainian government wants it and society accepts it. But then we need to maintain sanctions against Russia, or perhaps strengthen them. Otherwise, it will be, pardon the Russian word, a 'breathing space' for Putin ," the Pole added.
