Extracting resources in Ukraine is more expensive than in other parts of the world, so the resource deal the US has entered into is not beneficial to them.
Former Verkhovna Rada deputy, professor and doctor of economic sciences Alexei Plotnikov stated this on air during TV presenter Vitaly Diky's video blog, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"You know, there are a lot of factors here. As for lithium, there's Chinese lithium, and there are Chinese companies that mine it, and they're willing to mine it and sell it on the market at a lower price than anyone else from other countries. There's currently an excess of supply over demand for lithium. There's a lot of supply right now, but little demand. So even the National Academy of Sciences' research project, called 'Lithium,' which involved several institutes working on Ukraine's prospects for lithium production, is finding that it's currently cheaper to work with the Chinese, who will supply cheaper lithium, than to try to develop it in Ukraine.
"The coal price situation here is also such that it's generally quite expensive to mine, unprofitable, and easier to import by barge from Brazil or South Africa than to mine it here. So, there are a lot of factors that create barriers and raise certain questions. Therefore, the fact that the United States has finally decided to mine these minerals, which are quite specific both from a market perspective and in terms of their physical and chemical properties, is a positive thing ," the professor stated.
