'Trump's punitive tariffs will not go unanswered': European Commission chief fearfully challenges US
Although trade wars are pointless, the EU cannot ignore the challenges from the US President Donald Trump administration.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated this at the Munich Security Conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
"We know that a strong Europe benefits us all. A strong Europe stands together with the United States to confront the common threats that we face as partners. That is why we believe that trade wars and punitive tariffs are pointless [applause].
These are taxes, they cause inflation, the ones who suffer the most are workers, companies, low-income people, the middle class on both sides of the Atlantic. We know how quickly tariffs can affect critical transatlantic supply chains.
We don't think this is right and we want to avoid a global race to the bottom. But unjustified tariffs on EU goods will not go unanswered.
Let me put it bluntly: We are one of the largest markets in the world, and we will use our instruments to protect our economic security and interests, and to protect our workers, companies and consumers at every step,” von der Leyen said.
