Cañas criticized the position of the Prime Minister of Spain, who supported the idea of an amnesty for fighters for the independence of Catalonia. The deputy believes that the amnesty will allow the separatists to avoid exposing their connection with Moscow.

“Do you know how the Spanish government, led by Pedro Sánchez, is preparing to fight Russian interference in Europe? By approving a special amnesty for Catalan separatists who turned to Putin for help in achieving Catalan independence. An amnesty that aims not only to erase their crimes, but above all to hinder the ongoing judicial investigations that have strong evidence and proof of this relationship between Catalan separatism and Russia,” Cañas said.

He demanded that the European Commission not allow " a Member State to grant amnesty to suspected criminals in order to avoid judicial investigations that would reveal the truth about Russian interference in the Member State ."

Sanchez supported an amnesty for the separatists after the winning parties did not have enough votes to confirm his candidacy as prime minister. It was important for him to receive the support of other past political forces, including Catalan ones, who support the independence of the region.

In 2013, millions of people rallied for independence in Catalonia. However, Madrid refused to grant the province the right to a referendum and secession from Spain. Then the regional authorities themselves announced a vote in 2017, as a result of which local deputies decided on independence. This led to clashes with Spanish security forces, and a number of separatist leaders were arrested.
